MODALS IN PAST
Past modals with have
EXPLANATION
http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/grammar-reference/modals-%E2%80%93-deduction-pasthttp://www2.cambridge.org/interchangearcade/launch.do?activityID=521&level=2&unit=15&type=Cup_sentence_ordering&stage=2
http://www.brays-ingles.com/gramatica-ingles-modals.html
Using modal verbs to talk about the past:
must / might / could / may / can't + have + past participle
- must have + past participle
- might / might not have + past participle
- could / couldn’t have + past participle
- may / may not have + past participle
- can’t have + past participle
You: Where was Julie last night?
David:
- She must have forgotten about our date.
- She might have worked late.
- She could have taken the wrong bus.
- She may have felt ill.
- She can’t have stayed at home.
Some past modals can be formed by using have + the past participle of the main verb immediately after the modal. (should have, could have, would have, etc.)
However, since modals express possibility, intention, obligation, etc., they do not always indicate a definite tense. Therefore, when using past modals with have, special meanings need to be considered.
I should go to the funeral. I should have gone to the funeral. Lex might take Karen to the airport. Lex might have taken Karen to the airport. Lex could have taken Karen to the airport. Lex would have taken Karen to the airport. Otis didn't come to work yesterday. He had to take care of his children. His children must have been sick. | (I feel an obligation to go--later.) (I didn't go. Now I regret it.) (It's a future possibility.) (He may be on his way there now.) (Most likely he didn't.) (He didn't. He had an excuse.) (past fact) (past obligation) (conjecture about the past) |

PINK FLOYD "I WISH YOU WERE HERE"
SO, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN TELL
HEAVEN FROM HELL
BLUE SKIES FROM PAIN
CAN YOU TELL A GREEN FIELD
FROM A COLD STEEL RAIL?.
A SMILE FROM A VEIL?
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN TELL?
AND DID THEY GET TOU TO TRADE
YOUR HEROS FOR GHOSTS?
HOT ASHES FOR TREES?
HOT AIR FOR A COOL BREEZE?
COLD COMFORT FOR CHANGE?
AND DID YOU EXCHANGE
A WALK FOR A PART IN THE WAR
FOR A LEAD ROLE IN A CAGE?
HOW I WISH, HOW I WISH YOU WERE HERE
WE´RE JUST TWO LOST SOULS
SWIMMING IN A FISH BOWL!
YEAR AFTER YEAR.
RUNNING OVER THE
SAME OLD GROUND.
WHAT HAVE WE FOUND?
THE SAME OLD FEARS.
WISH YOU WERE HERE.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
The story of The Phantom of the Opera has inspired many artists... if you like metal music you will enjoy this song played by Iron Maiden, if you don't like this kind of music you can practice English and appreciate a different perspective of the book.
Hope you enjoy it!
LYRICS:
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
I've been looking so long for you now you won't get away from my grasp.
You've been living so long in hiding in hiding behind that false mask.
And you know and I know that you ain't got long now to last.
Your looks and your feelings are just the remains of your past.
You're standing in the wings, there you wait for the curtain to fall.
Knowing the terror and holding you have on us all.
Yeah, I know that you're gonna scratch me, maim me and maul.
You know I'm helpless from your mesmerising cat call.
Keep your distance, walk away, don't take his bait.
Don't you stray, don't fade away.
Watch your step, he's out to get you, come what may.
Don't you stray, from the narrow way.
I'm running and hiding in my dreams you're always there.
You're the Phantom of the Opera, you're the devil, you're just out to scare.
You damaged my mind and my soul it just floats through the air.
Haunt me, you taunt me, you torture me back at your lair.

LANGSTON HUGHES
I TOO
http://www.poetryarchive.org/poetryarchive/singlePoem.do?poemId=1552
CROSS
My old man's a white old man
And my old mother's black.
If ever I cursed my white old man
I take my curses back.
If ever I cursed my black old mother
And wished she were in hell,
I'm sorry for that evil wish
And now I wish her well
My old man died in a fine big house.
My ma died in a shack.
I wonder were I'm going to die,
Being neither white nor black?
JAMES MERCER LANGSTON HUGHES
He was an American poet (February 1, 1902 – May 22, 1967), social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form jazz poetry. Hughes is best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that "Harlem was in vogue".
Ancestry and childhood
Both of Hughes' paternal and maternal great-grandmothers were African-American, his maternal great-grandfather was white and of Scottish descent. A paternal great-grandfather was of European Jewish descent. Hughes's maternal grandmother Mary Patterson was of African-American, French, English and Native American descent. One of the first women to attend Oberlin College, she first married Lewis Sheridan Leary, also of mixed race. Lewis Sheridan Leary subsequently joined John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859 and died from his wounds.
